Terms of Service

Last updated: March 4, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account or using Competent ("the Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service. We may update these Terms from time to time — continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

2. Description of Service

Competent is a web-based tool that helps CPA exam candidates in Canada track practice case performance at the Assessment Opportunity (AO) level. The Service provides case logging, competency heatmaps, trend analytics, weakness detection, and study notes — organized by the CPA competency framework.

3. Account Registration

You must provide a valid email address and create a password to use the Service. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity under your account. You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.

4. Free and Paid Tiers

Competent offers a free tier (up to 10 cases) and a paid tier ("Full Access") for a one-time payment of $29 CAD. The paid tier grants permanent access to all features, including unlimited case logging, full analytics, trend lines, weakness flags, and technical notes.

We reserve the right to change pricing for new purchases. Existing paid users retain their access regardless of future price changes.

5. Payments and Refunds

Payments are processed securely through Stripe. We do not store your credit card information. Full Access is a one-time purchase — there are no recurring charges.

We offer a 14-day full refund policy, no questions asked. To request a refund, email hello@competent.app within 14 days of purchase. See our Refund Policy for details.

6. User Content

You retain ownership of all data you enter into Competent, including case logs, AO scores, comments, and technical notes ("User Content"). You grant us a limited license to store and process your User Content solely to provide the Service to you.

We do not access, share, sell, or analyze your User Content for any purpose other than providing the Service. Your data is yours.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

8. Intellectual Property

"Competent" and associated logos, designs, and code are the property of Competent and its creators. The Service is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to CPA Canada, Densmore, or any other exam preparation provider.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that use of Competent will result in passing the CFE or any exam. The Service is a study tracking tool — not exam preparation advice or tutoring.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Competent and its creators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for the Service ($29 CAD or $0 for free tier users).

11. Account Termination

You may delete your account at any time through Settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms. Upon deletion, all your User Content is permanently removed from our systems.

12. Modifications to the Service

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We will make reasonable efforts to notify paid users of material changes. If we discontinue the Service entirely, paid users who purchased within the prior 12 months will receive a full refund.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
