Structured case debriefs · AO-level performance tracking

Every case deserves
a real debrief.

Competent guides you through a structured AO-by-AO debrief after every practice case — then maps your scores into a heatmap, trend lines, and gap analysis across all six competency areas. See exactly where you're strong, what's stalling, and what to study next.

Built for CPA candidates who want to know exactly where they stand

CFE aligned AO-level scoring Your data stays yours Built in Canada

The missing piece isn't more cases.

You're already writing cases and checking solutions. Competent turns every debrief into structured performance data — so your study plan runs on evidence, not instinct.

Debrief every case with structure

After you check the suggested solution, Competent walks you through each AO: what competency was tested, how you scored, and what to revisit. No more staring at the marking guide wondering what you actually missed. Every debrief becomes part of your performance record.

See where you actually stand

Your competency heatmap maps every AO score across six areas and five bands. NC clusters in AA that were invisible in your spreadsheet show up instantly. A quiet C/CD streak in MA is obvious at a glance. One grid, no guesswork.

Know exactly what to study next

Trend lines and automated weakness flags turn raw data into direction. Not "work on FR" — but "FR: 3 NC in your last 10 cases, average score flat for three weeks." The gap between where you are and where you need to be becomes specific and actionable.

Automated weakness flags

No more guessing which areas need work. Competent scans your last 10 cases and surfaces specific warnings: "AA: 4 NC in your last 10 cases." Gaps, time overruns, stalling competencies — all flagged automatically.

Technical notes by competency

Build a living study reference one debrief at a time. Each competency area gets its own note — capture key frameworks, common errors, and debrief insights. Your case debriefs become your most effective study material.

Built for CFE structure

Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 tagging. Elective tracking. Source filtering. This isn't a generic study planner with a CPA sticker on it — every feature was designed around how the CFE actually works and how candidates actually prepare.

The debrief is the practice.

01

Write the case

Nothing changes about how you study. Sit down, read the case, draft your response under time pressure, and check the suggested solution. You're already doing this. The struggle is real and it's supposed to be — every candidate writing cases goes through the exact same grind.

02

Debrief with structure

This is where the real learning happens. Open Competent and work through each AO in the case. For every Assessment Opportunity, identify the competency area, score yourself honestly against the suggested solution, and note what you missed and why. Did you fail to identify the issue? Identify it but apply the wrong framework? Run out of time? A thorough debrief takes real effort — and it's the single highest-value activity in your entire study process.

03

Let data show what gut feel can't

After a few cases, your heatmap and trend lines surface patterns no amount of self-reflection would catch. Maybe you've been avoiding AA for three weeks. Maybe your FR scores plateaued while you kept writing FR cases. Maybe Tax is quietly becoming your strongest area. Now you know where to aim — and your next case is never random.

"The candidates who pass aren't the ones who wrote the most cases. They're the ones who debriefed every case like their career depended on it — because it did."

Questions candidates actually ask

What exactly is an Assessment Opportunity?
An Assessment Opportunity (AO) is a specific issue or requirement within a CFE case that markers evaluate you on. Each AO is tied to a competency area (FR, SG, MA, AA, Finance, or Tax) and scored on the NA/NC/RC/C/CD scale. A single Day 2 case might have 8–12 AOs across multiple competencies. Competent lets you log and track each one individually — because "I passed the case" tells you nothing about where you actually stood.
Why track at the AO level instead of just the case level?
Because the CFE doesn't pass or fail you on cases — it passes or fails you on competency depth across all your AOs. A candidate who writes 40 cases but never looks at their AO distribution by competency is studying blind. Tracking at the AO level shows you exactly which competencies are strong, which are weak, and whether your scores are trending in the right direction.
Will this work with future CPA exam changes?
Competent is built on the current 6-competency CFE framework. The architecture supports multiple competency frameworks, so if CPA Canada updates the exam structure, we'll add the new framework alongside the existing one. You won't need to start over.
Why is it free for only 10 cases?
Ten cases is enough to experience the full workflow — logging cases, entering AOs, seeing your heatmap start to populate, and getting your first weakness flags. It's enough to know whether this fits your study process. After that, $29 unlocks everything permanently. No trial expiration, no pressure.
Does it work with Densmore and CPA Canada cases?
Yes. You can tag cases by source — CPA Canada, Densmore, Core 1, Core 2, Capstone 1, Capstone 2, Elective, or Other. The analytics show you how you're performing across all sources, so you can see if you score differently on Densmore vs. CPA Canada cases.
How is my data protected?
Your data is stored in a Supabase database with row-level security — meaning your account can only access your own cases, AOs, and notes. We don't share data with anyone. We don't run analytics on your study patterns. Your data is yours.
I'm re-writing the CFE. Is this still useful?
Especially useful. Re-writers often have a better sense of what went wrong the first time, but struggle to quantify it. Competent gives you the data to confirm your instincts — and catch blind spots you didn't know you had. If anything, re-writers get more value because they know what the scores mean.
Is there a mobile app?
Competent is a web app that works great on mobile browsers — the entire interface is responsive. Most candidates debrief at their desk right after writing a case, so a native app would add complexity without adding value. If that changes, we'll build one.
What's your refund policy?
Full refund within 14 days, no questions asked. Email hello@competent.app and we'll process it same day. We'd rather you try it risk-free than hesitate.
